Take a walk with us, back in time
A true jewel nestled in the heart of Hampshire is the White Horse. Stepping into this venerable coaching inn is like opening a well worn novel, each creaking floorboard and timber beam whispering tales from centuries past.
Its story begins in the 15th century, between 1450 and 1530, when it was purpose built as an inn, a rare architectural treasure from the Tudor era. Some say its roots stretch even deeper, possibly to the 1100s, when it may have served as a guesthouse for the nearby Romsey Abbey. The stone cellars and ancient timbers bear silent witness to these bygone days.
In the mid 1700s, The White Horse flourished during the coaching era, strategically positioned on routes connecting Winchester, Salisbury, and the bustling port of Poole. It even hosted King George III and his family on their journeys between Windsor Castle and their summer retreat in Weymouth, with documented visits in 1801 and 1802.
Around 1823, the inn received a Georgian makeover, bestowing upon it the elegant façade that graces MarketPlace today. Despite the decline of coaching inns with the advent of the railway in 1847, The White Horse retained its prominence. It became a favored spot for Lord Palmerston, who, as Home Secretary and later Prime Minister, delivered significant speeches within its walls.
Fast forward to 2021, when The Coaching Inn Group lovingly restored this historic gem, blending its rich heritage with modern comforts. Today, guests can revel in its 29 individually designed rooms, savor seasonal delights in the brasserie, and bask in the ambiance of the frescoed Tudor Lounge.
The White Horse Hotel isn’t merely a place to rest one’s head, it’s a living tapestry of English history, offering a warm embrace to all who cross its threshold
